The local Barcelona government has introduced a law regarding anti-social behaviour, the l'ordenança de convivència which is literally translated as the "order of cohabitation". The law has been developed so that authorities may prosecute those committing crimes against property or people in the city. The law, which came into operation mid-February 2006, means that police officers can impose fines of between €30 and €3,000 depending on the severity of an offence. The law will be imposed not only on Spanish residents but also on tourists. In addition to the penalty fine the offender must also pay for any damage caused to public or private property.
